Webinar October 4— "Learning in a New Language"

A growing number of students today are bringing to school a home language other than English. School leaders need to be prepared with essential knowledge to ensure that all students are able to be successful in an English-speaking environment.  Dr. Lori Helman will discuss her book Learning in a New Language: A School-wide Approach to Support K-8 Emergent Bilinguals. Save the date for this important topic. Registration details coming soon.

BIG NEWS: MN Legislature Passes the READ Act

The K-12 Omnibus Education Finance Bill became Minnesota law on May 24, 2023. The bill includes the READ Act, which

  • Establishes a new state literacy goal: Have every child reading at grade level, every year from K-12
  • Mandates teacher training in Science of Reading—courses approved by MN Department of Education (MDE)
  • Mandates screening and progress monitoring—tool approved by MDE
  • Requires districts to use use evidence-based curriculum
  • Makes money available to districts to purchase evidence-based curriculum from approved MDE list

These changes are monumental and represent a true shift in how our state approaches reading instruction. We congratulate the literacy partners who collaborated with the legislature for five years on these important educational priorities—Decoding Dyslexia MN; The Reading Center-Dyslexia Institute of MN; and the International Dyslexia Association, Upper Midwest Branch; along with many leaders from HELP and other concerned organizations. THANK YOU for all your efforts!
